In February 2013, Washington's city council halted efforts to bring online gaming to the District of Columbia in a 10-2 vote.

Washington's venture into online gaming began in 2010, when an amendment allowing online gaming was attached to a budget bill in the middle of the night. The bill ed without many realizing that it authorized online gaming.

Uproar ensued when the District moved to implement online gaming, which would have included poker, bingo and blackjack. The online gaming system would have been istered by the city's lottery agency.
